History

Read On Wisconsin began as on online book club created by former Wisconsin First Lady Jessica Doyle in 2004.

In 2011, the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC) of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison took over administering the Read On Wisconsin program. ReadOnWisconsin Press Release (September 9, 2011)

The CCBC’s partners include the Division of Media, Educational Resources and Information Technology (MERIT) of the School of Education at the UW-Madison; the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s Division for Libraries and Technology; and TeachingBooks.net. The Youth Services Section of the Wisconsin Library Association is a Read On Wisconsin sponsor.

From the beginning, Read On Wisconsin has been about connecting kids and teens with terrific books, and encouraging them to think and to talk about what they are reading, or what is being read to them.

Read On Wisconsin continues to be an online literacy program that highlights high quality books for children and teens throughout our state. A few things have changed: the Read On Wisconsin site no longer has a book discussion forum for children and teens. Instead, we’re inviting young Wisconsin readers to make and video BOOKTRAILERS about ROW titles to share here on our site. And librarians, teachers, and other adults who work with children and teens can share information and ideas for using Read On Wisconsin titles in our FORUM for librarians and educators. We hope to see ROW book clubs, storytimes, and other programming throughout Wisconsin!

Read On Wisconsin Age Groups

Read On Wisconsin features recommended books each month for children and teens at five different age-group levels:

   Babies, Toddlers and Preschoolers

   Primary (Grades K-2)

   Intermediate (Grades 3-5)

   Middle School

   High School
