This year’s ROW books were selected by a Literacy Advisory Committee that read, discussed and chose titles for the list. In making their choices, the advisory committee for each age level group works to create a list that reflects cultural diversity and authenticity, features a balance of male and female protagonists/subjects, and includes a variety of genres and formats (fiction/non-fiction/poetry/graphic novels).
In addition, committee members try to highlight one or more books by Wisconsin authors and/or illustrators, and create a list for each age level group that will, as a whole, meet the needs of children at a range of different reading abilities.
Once the advisory committee chooses books for the year, they write three questions for each title. These Discussion Starters model ways to interact and engage with children and teens around literature. They can be used to jump start discussions=–although we think kids will have plenty to say with or without them!
